The 16th annual Hungarian Jewish Summer Festival is currently being held in Budapest between 25 August and 2 September and offers various programs introducing Jewish culture. The festival is the largest of its kind in Europe and this year the Prime Minister’s Office is sponsoring the event with 58 million forints.
The number of border crossings between Hungary and Slovakia will double in the next seven years, State Secretary for External Economic Relations and Foreign Affairs Péter Szijjártó said at the inauguration of a border crossing between Zemplénagárd and Velké Trakany on Tuesday.
An agreement between Hungary and the European Commission on lifting the suspension of 13 of the country’s European Union development programmes is “99.9%” certain, Deputy State Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office Nándor Csepreghy stated. “We see openness on the part of the European Commission, which will lead to an agreement.”

State Secretary for External Economic Relations and Foreign Affairs Péter Szijjártó signed an agreement in the Parliament building on Friday on opening a Confucius Institute in Miskolc. The State Secretary emphasised: the Institute has been established through the cooperation of the University of Miskolc, the Beijing University of Chemical Technology and the Chinese Language Council. The Institute will play an important economic role in the life of Miskolc and act as a bridge between the two countries within the field of strategic cooperation.
To boost its exports Hungary must reduce the country's exposure to EU markets and turn to fast-growing countries in the East, State Secretary for External Economic Relations and Foreign Affairs Péter Szijjártó said on Thursday.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán gave a speech in Székesfehérvár on Monday, honouring the 2013 Saint Stephen Memorial Year, which commemorates the first Hungarian king’s legacy on the 975th anniversary of his death. Prior to the speech, the Prime Minister and Mayor of Székesfehérvár András Cser-Palkovics laid wreaths at the king’s tomb. Despite the bank holiday, the Government also held a cabinet meeting in the city on Monday.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has nominated Mónika Karas as Head of the National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH). Ms. Karas will take over this position following Annamárai Szalai’s recent death. The Prime Minister informed President János Áder about his recommendation in a letter, with effect from 19 August.
