Another swearing-in ceremony for Crown Guards took place on September 20 in the cupola hall of the Parliament building. In the presence of László Kövér, the Speaker of the Parliament and the member of the Holy Crown Committee, Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende and Gen. Dr. Tibor Benkő, the Chief of the MoD Defence Staff, the crown guards took their oath of allegiance, pledging that “I shall be guarding the Holy Crown with utmost loyalty…and I will never let it fall into unauthorized hands, even if I have to sacrifice my life for it”.

It all depends on whether we are willing to learn about and discover our national heritage for ourselves- Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende said during the opening ceremony of the National Gallop in Heroes’ Square on 17 September.
The most trying drilling exercise of the Hungarian Defence Forces (HDF), the assault riflemen’s tenth training course, began on Monday, September 12. There exist only a few trainings in the world, similar to this, such as for instance the ranger-training of the American Army.
The American-Hungarian Military Medical Conference staged for the 19th time is held in the Stefánia Palace between 11 and 15 September. Deputy Chief of the MoD Defence Staff Lt. Gen. Zoltán Orosz opened the event Monday morning, 12 September. The General greeted the 35 American and 20 Hungarian military physicians after the rendition of the American and the Hungarian National Anthems.
On Thursday, September 15, Defence Minister Csaba Hende received in his office on a ceremonial visit Col. Ulrich Pfeiffer, the Military Attaché of the Federal Republic of Germany accredited to our country, now resigning from his post, and the new Military Attaché Col. Manfred Knopp, introducing himself. At the event present was also the Deputy State Secretary for Defence Economy Gábor Márki.
On August 31 a combined “Welcome Home” and farewell ceremony was held in the banquet hall of the HDF Joint Force Command (HDF JFC). Lt.-Gen. József Kovács,the Commander of the HDF JFC handed over tokens of appreciation and medals to the troops returning home from missions and wished the departing ones soldiers’ luck.
On the occasion of the 485th anniversary of the Battle of Mohács – on Sunday, August 28 – the new reception building of the National Historical Memorial Site of Mohács was inaugurated with all due solemnities in Sátorhely, where Dr. Gábor Szarka, the Head of the MoD Cabinet Office was also present, and laid wreaths.

Welcome home ceremony for peacekeepers coming back from Bosnia Herzegovina and Somalia in Tata
On Wednesday, August 3, the troops of the 8th rotation of the HDF European Union Force Contingent (EUFOR-8 HUNCON) coming home from Bosnia Herzegovina, and the soldiers, who completed their service in the European Union Training Mission – Somalia (EUTM-Somalia) were greeted in the presence of their family members and relatives in Tata.
On Tuesday, August 2, a farewell ceremony was held at the HDF Lt. Ittebei Kiss József Helicopter Base in Szolnok for the troops of the fifth rotation of the HDF KFOR Contingent (KFOR-5 HUNCON) that deploy to Pristina. MoD Deputy State Secretary for Defence Economy Dr. Gábor Márki and Deputy Chief of MoD Defence Staff Lt. Gen. Zoltán Orosz graced the event with their presence.
Maj-Gen. Alojz Šteiner, Chief of the General Staff of the Slovenian Armed Forces, and his Hungarian counterpart, Chief of the MoD Defence Staff Gen. Dr. Tibor Benkő had a meeting in Hungary on Thursday, July 28. At the event held in Lenti, the two parties discussed, among others, the future of the Hungarian-Italian-Slovenian Multinational Land Forces (MLF), the issue of pooling and sharing forces and defence capabilities, and the ways how to further strengthen military-to-military relations between the two countries.
The traditional medal parade for Hungarian and Portuguese peacekeepers serving in Camp Slim Lines, Pristina, Kosovo was held on Monday, July 25. Maj.-Gen. József Kovács, Commander, HDF Joint Force Command (HDF JFC) also attended the ceremony, which was organized for the troops who are going to complete their tour of duty abroad in these days.
The HR strategy and the new military career model were the topics on the agenda of the Commanders’ conference, held on Friday, 22nd of July at the HDF Joint Force Command (JFC) in Székesfehérvár. During the event Dr. Gábor Szarka, Head of the MoD Cabinet Office and Lt.-Gen. Zoltán Orosz, Deputy Chief of the MoD Defence Staff gave a briefing on the changes concerning the introduction of the new career model, adopted by the Minister of Defence.
On Monday, July 18, the HDF 34th ‘Bercsényi László’ Special Operations Force (SOF) Battalion received 14 HMMWVs (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles). Eleni Tsakopoulos Kounalakis, the Ambassador of the United States of America to Budapest handed over the vehicles ceremoniously to Minister of Defence Dr. Csaba Hende at the ‘Lt. Ittebei Kiss József’ Helicopter Base, Szolnok.
The triumphant battle of Nándorfehérvár, which was fought 555 years ago, was also commemorated on Friday, July 22 at the series of events entitled Danube Day Celebration. The keynote speaker of the event was Dr. István Simicskó, the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Defence
The HDF Provincial Reconstruction Team (HUN PRT) continues to provide assistance for the poor in Baghlan Province, Afghanistan. Last time the children living in the orphanage of Pol-e Khomri and the occupants of the widows’ house in Deh Sallah District received care packages from the Hungarians.
A joint welcome home and farewell ceremony was held on July 7 at the HDF Joint Force Command (HDF JFC) to welcome the second rotation (35 personnel) of the HDF ISAF National Support Element, the second rotation (18 personnel) of the Hungarian Logistic Mentor Team of the HDF ISAF Combat Service Support (CSS) School, and 25 soldiers who served in individual positions during the past six months in ISAF, Afghanistan. At the same time, the occasion was a farewell ceremony for four officers who are to leave for their tour of duty abroad.
Between June 26 and July 1, the Military Engineering Training School – which is situated in a scenic environment at the foot of the Southern Carpathians in Râmnicu Vâlcea – and the adjoining complex military training area hosted the annual Exercise TISA-2011 of the multinational (Hungarian–Romanian–Serbian) Engineer Battalion.
Between 4 and 10 July, the HR Department of the Ministry of Defence and the National Roma Self-government organizes an Equal Opportunities Camp in Tata, at the HDF 25th ‘Klapka György’ Infantry Brigade. The program is meant to raise awareness of equal opportunities, in accordance with the objectives laid down in ministerial directives, and to present and demonstrate the Ministry’s special activities and professional work related to equal opportunities. MoD Cabinet Chief Dr. Gábor Szarka opened the camp on Monday, July 4.
Family members and relatives greeted the Hungarian troops of the fifth rotation of the HDF Operational Mentor and Liaison Team (HDF OMLT), who have recently returned from the area of operations. The “Welcome Home” ceremony was held on Thursday, June 30 inside the ‘Klapka György’ Barracks in Tata, where Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende delivered a speech.
