The training program for the sixth rotation of the HDF KFOR (Kosovo Force) contingent (KFOR-6 HUNCON) is nearing completion. The training battalion has been rehearsing for the last and most important test in Hungary, the culmination exercise (CULEX).
On November 29 Dr. András Patyi, the incoming rector of the National Public Service University which is to start operating as of January 1, 2012 received his letter of appointment in a ceremony from the President of the Republic in Sándor Palace, Budapest.
Hungary has made commitments to join the shared military capability development projects of EU member states in several “pooling and sharing” areas such as the Helicopter Training Program (HTP), field hospitals, flying training for aircraft pilots and European transport hubs – Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende said on November 30 in Brussels.
“The cyberspace has opened up a new domain of warfare!” said Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende during a conference held in the Árpád room of the County Hall in Debrecen under the title “Hungary in a Constantly Renewing NATO” by the Hungarian Atlantic Council on Thursday, November 24. The event was preceded by the opening of the exhibition entitled “From the Hungarian People’s Army to NATO membership”.
On Wednesday, November 23 Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende received in his office Munsi Abdul Majeed, the governor of Baghlan Province and Moh. Rasul Mohsene (Rasul Khan), the Shura leader of Baghlan Province. Also present at the meeting were Lt.-Gen. Zoltán Orosz, the Deputy Chief of the MoD Defence Staff and MoD Deputy State Secretary for Defence Policy and Planning Péter Siklósi.
On Tuesday, November 15 the military attachés accredited to Budapest visited the HDF Geoinformation Service (HDF GEOS).
The Military Cemetery of the British Commonwealth of Nations was the venue of Remembrance Sunday on November 13. At the Cross standing in the middle of the dead heroes’ graveyard, besides the diplomatic representatives and military attachés of the Commonwealth countries and other nations, also Minister of Defence Dr. Csaba Hende laid the wreath of remembrance.
There is an aviation history event going on in Hungary’s airspace: this is the first time that Gripen fighters with Swedish and Hungarian markings are engaging in “air combat” against each other. The idea of the joint training flight originated with the Swedish partners, and the participants of the Exercise Satenas Exchange 2011 had some special badges made with the words GRIPEN MAFIA 2011 on them.
On November 8 the Hungarian Parliament opened a general debate on the proposed amendment to the Act on establishing a new organization for the military national security services. In his keynote speech Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende said “During the last 20 years, time after time the opportunity emerged to integrate the two military secret services, the Military Security Office and the Military Intelligence Office. Now we have the will and opportunity to implement the integration.”
During his official visit to Vittoria, Sicily between November 1-4, MoD Parliamentary State Secretary Dr. István Simicskó attended a memorial service and Holy Mass celebrated in commemoration of the Hungarian troops who died in World War I.
Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende signed an agreement of cooperation with Attila Vén, the mayor of Medina concerning the infrastructural support to the radar project to be implemented at the village. Under the terms of the agreement, until 2014 the Ministry of Defence will pay a total of HUF 100 million as a non-refundable governmental subsidy to Medina in order to finance the infrastructural development related to the construction project. Within 30 days from the agreement coming into force, the village is to receive the first installment worth HUF 25 million.

On Thursday, October 27 Gen. Dr. Tibor Benkő, the Chief of the MoD Defence Staff received Gen. Tong Shiping, the deputy director of the General Political Department (GPD) of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA). Heading a delegation of six, the Chinese general was on a visit to Hungary to conduct negotiations.
Under the coordination of the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, altogether eight ministries, five national security services and several cooperating organizations have completed a one-week NATO exercise.
Between October 4-10, an inspection committee paid a pre-deployment site survey visit to Camp Slim Lines, Pristina. Csaba Sári, the point of contact (POC) officer of the HDF Joint Force Command Operations (J3) Directorate accompanied the key leaders of the sixth rotation of the HDF KFOR contingent (KFOR-6 HUN CON) to Kosovo.
On October 6 around noon, the ISAF Regional Command-North (RC-N) notified the officer on duty of the HDF Provincial Reconstruction Team (HUN PRT) that a Swedish ISAF service member got separated from his unit due to external circumstances. The allied soldier in need of help could not be located exactly, so he could have been anywhere over a several square kilometers-wide area.
The red sludge disaster occurred a year ago, which claimed the life of ten people, and caused enormous material, environmental, and immeasurable psychical damages. On the occasion of the anniversary commemorations were held in Kolontár and in Devecser, and awards were handed over on Tuesday, October 4.
The 28th rotation of the Hungarian Defence Forces’ mission in Cyprus (UNFICYP HUNCON) deployed to the area of operations (AO) in September, 2010. The HUNCON personnel were last seen together on the airplane transporting the rotation, since they were performing their tasks during the 12 months of their tour of duty abroad in four different places, mostly serving with multinational units.
Hungary is going to bring in line with NATO’s plans its own mid-term Afghanistan policy which is currently under preparation, Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende said in Brussels on Thursday, October 6 at the NATO Defence Ministers Meeting.
On Wednesday, September 28 in the joint organisation of the Ministry of Defence and the Honvéd Re-enactment Association (HOHE) the one-time students commemorated the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the six Cadet Schools operating from 1941 until 1945 in the Banquet Hall of the Zrínyi Miklós National Defence University (ZMNE). The wife of the President of the Republic Katalin Schmittné Makray, Dr. István Simicskó, the MoD Parliamentary State Secretary and the former Prime Minister Dr. Péter Boross were also present at the event.
