Stable education policy needed for better results

Hungary needs a consequent education policy that is stable in the medium term in order to improve students’ PISA results, Sándor Brassói, head of department at the Ministry of Human Resources said at a conference on Wednesday, adding that permanent changes undermine the results of the reforms.

Budapest's 9th district receives expanded, refurbished nursery

The 9th district of Budapest inaugurated on Thursday the renewed and expanded “Pixie House” nursery. The nursery had its existing 40 places refurbished and an additional 28 were created at a total cost of 168 million forints (EUR 547,000), Minister of State for Social and Family Affairs Miklós Soltész said at the inauguration.

Two exhibitions planned for freshly renovated Castle Bazaar

The recently renovated Royal Garden Pavilion or Castle Bazaar at the foot of the Buda Castle will host two major exhibitions in the near future: am exhibition gathering the works of famous Hungarian painter Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka this summer and a memorial exhibition marking the beginning of World War I next year, Government Commissioner László L. Simon said at a press event on Thursday in Budapest.

State and municipality officials laid the foundation stone of a training pool in Budapest’s 11th district on Thursday – part of a Government initiative aimed at ensuring that every child should learn to swim. The event was attended by Minister of State for Sports and Youth István Simicskó, Mayor of the 11th district Tamás Hoffmann and Deputy Mayor of Budapest Gábor Bagdy.

Borsod County Hospital receives new wing

Minister for Human Resources Zoltán Balog inaugurated on Wednesday the new, 11 billion forint (EUR 35.7 million) wing of Borsod County Hospital in the northeast Hungarian city of Miskolc. The Minister said at the inauguration that the Government was aware of the county’s needs and was catering for them as best as possible.

Minister Balog inaugurates youth hostel in Kömlőd

Minister for Human Resources Zoltán Balog inaugurated a 34-bed youth hostel in the northern Hungarian village of Kömlőd on Tuesday. The hostel was built in the loft of the Calvinist church dormitory. During the religious service preceding the inauguration, Mr. Balog – a Calvinist pastor himself – said that young people need communities, adding that Hungarians belong to the community of all Hungarians living within the Carpathian basin while in religious communities the accent is on the community.

Fifty new jobs for the disabled in Csurgó

In the past three and a half years the Government has fundamentally changed the employment policy with relation to disabled people. The currently accredited organisations employ 30,500 disabled people and a further 22,655 persons have been hired by private companies thanks to the rehabilitation card, which means lower employer contributions for companies, Minister of State for Social and Family Affairs Miklós Soltész said on Tuesday at the inauguration of a new workplace employing disabled people in the southwest Hungarian town of Csurgó.

Home for the elderly in Kőkút receives solar energy system

A home for the elderly in the southwest Hungarian village of Kőkút has received a solar energy system thanks to a 22 million forint (EUR 72,000) state subsidy. Minister of State for Social and Family Affairs Miklós Soltész said at the inauguration that Government grants had made possible the renovation of several homes for the elderly in Somogy County. He said these investments contribute to offering a quality life for elderly people in need of support. The home received 88 solar panels.

Memorial building inaugurated in honour of Márton Kerecsendi-Kiss in Bicske

A memorial house was inaugurated in honour of Márton Kerecsendi-Kiss on Friday in Bicske in County Fejér. The late poet, writer and teacher operated Hungary’s first Roma school in this building from 1938.

The 34th Budapest Spring Festival opened on Friday with a guest exhibition of self-portraits by Hungarian artists from Florence’s Uffizi Gallery in the Budapest History Museum (BTM). Human Resources Minister Zoltán Balog said at the opening that this year’s Festival offers twice as many performances as the previous one and state funding for the event has also been doubled.
