An extraordinary deficit figure for 2011

The Hungarian budget ended the year of 2011 with a surplus of 4.3 percent which is an outstanding achievement both from an international and a long term Hungarian perspective and also unprecedented since the regime change. The deficit figure calculated according to the EU methodology, however, includes a number of known one-off items which complicate long term comparisons. Therefore, the Ministry for National Economy considers it a priority to share with the public the deficit data excluding one-off items.

Solar collector tender open for another one and a half month

The extended submission deadline for the tender entitled "Sub-programme for the establishment of solar collector systems facilitating the use of renewable energy carriers, generating residential hot water and providing booster heating" published at the beginning of October 2011 under the New Széchenyi Plan Green Investment Scheme in the amount of 2.97 billion is 15 May 2012. The extension of participation is justified by the spectacular vivacity of interest on part of tenderers in recent weeks.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán attended the jubilee meeting of the Curia, formerly known as the Supreme Court, where he also spoke about the planned relocation of the institution in his ceremonial speech. According to plans, the Curia would be relocated to its original seat at Kossuth tér, opposite the Parliament Building, after 150 years. The building of the former justice palace currently accommodates the Museum of Ethnography. Once the Curia is given back its original seat, the symbolic constitutional triangle will be complete; the triangle of legislative, executive and judicial power.

Parliament Votes Unanimously to Adopt Hungaricum Act

Parliament voted on Monday to adopt the Hungaricum Act with a consensus between the four major parties by 304 votes for and with only five abstentions from the LMP. According to the definition of the Act, a Hungaricum denotes a value worthy of emphasis that represents the highest quality of Hungarian product with its characteristically Hungarian attributes, uniqueness, special nature and quality.

Aviation safety revision may justify significant improvement

The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the organisation of the United Nations specialised in air transport has carried out an overall aviation safety audit in Hungary between 26 and 30 March 2012. According to the audit results, significant improvement is experienced in the field of regulatory, supervisory, training and operational structures and authoritative procedures since the last inspection in 2008.

According to the latest flash report of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH), in January 2012 the volume of exports and imports increased by 5.8 percent and 2.9 percent, respectively, in comparison to the corresponding period of the previous year. The trade balance in the first month of the year had a surplus of 129bn HUF.

FX debtors can utilize the fixed exchange rate loan system from now on

The state budget according to EU methodology had for 2011 a surplus of 1204.6bn HUF which corresponds to the 4.3 percent of GDP. The budget deficit excluding one-off items was 2.43 percent instead of the 2.94 percent which had been assumed. This is an outstanding achievement considering prior domestic results and data of other countries as well.

The Atlas of Economic Complexity

The researchers of the American Harvard and MIT universities concluded a study on economic complexity last year. The atlas analyzes the foreign trade of 128 countries and sets up an economic growth ranking which is based on the so-called Economic Complexity Index (ECI). The basis for the analysis is the quantity and complexity of exported goods and the frequency of exports. Consequently, services and non-export goods were not included in the study.
