Hungarians kidnapped in Syria

Three Hungarians were kidnapped in Syria on 13th August. According to the Hungarian Counter-Terrorism Centre (TEK), on Monday morning unknown gunmen stopped a vehicle in the suburbs of Damascus and kidnapped six people − three locals and three Hungarians. The latter are former policemen, who retired from the Hungarian forces several years ago. So far the kidnappers have not communicated through any channels – official or unofficial – and have yet to make any demands, either from the families or the Hungarian Embassy in Damascus.

Industrial output increased also in June

In June 2012 the industrial sector put up a positive performance just as it did in the previous month, the pace of growth however has declined marginally. Unadjusted and working day-adjusted industrial output both increased by 0.6 percent in June compared to the same period of the previous year, which was primarily due to the continued favourable performance of transport equipment manufacturing and the food industry. The seasonally and working day-adjusted monthly index declined by 2.2 percent.

The Hungarian GDP figure is in line with European economic growth

In the second quarter of 2012 Hungary could not detach itself from negative international economic tendencies either. After growth of 1.7 per cent in 2011, which was a high figure even in Europe, in the second quarter of 2012 according to adjusted data GDP declined by 1 per cent. This decline is smaller compared to the previous quarter (unadjusted data signal contraction of 1.2 per cent) – the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported earlier this morning in its release. According to that, about half of the sectors of national economy stagnated. The performance of information and communication sectors increased, whereas that of construction declined significantly.

Hungary hosts the 6th World Congress of Finno-Ugric Peoples

In September 2012 Hungary will host the 6th World Congress of Finno-Ugric Peoples, in Siófok on Lake Balaton. The event – which was established in 1992 with the support of then President of Hungary Árpád Göncz – aims to strengthen cultural, economic and political ties between Finno-Ugric countries and communities. In May 2012 Zoltán Balog Minister of Human Resources charged Judit Hammerstein with the responsibility of organising the Congress.

London 2012 Olympics a great success for the Hungarian team

With eight gold, four silver and five bronze medals, Hungary took 9th place in the final official medals table for the 2012 London Olympics. This is the first time since the 1992 Barcelona Olympics that Hungary has come in the top ten.

New Zealand’s Prime Minister John Key criticised the Hungarian troops this week, saying that they refused to patrol after dark in Baghlan, the province under Hungarian control, and their reluctance had led to an increase in insurgent activity in the area. Positive developments regarding employment and the rate of activity in Hungary

According to the latest Hungarian data published by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH), in the country the number of employed in the second quarter of 2012 averaged 3 million 876 thousand which has been the best figure of the past couple of years. Compared to the same period of the previous year, the number of people who had managed to get a job thereby increased by 67 000. The below chart shows the change in the number of employed over time.

In July the surplus of the central subsystem in the state budget was 80.2 billion forints. Last year, even ignoring the 500 billion-forint block purchase of MOL shares, the surplus for the same period was only around 40 billion forints, therefore a significant development of the budgetary position can be observed.

The Government is promoting the Hungarian – Italian Cultural Season 2013 (which starts on 1 January) by setting up a Hungarian – Italian tent at the Sziget Festival. The slogan of the 2013 event series – which aims to strengthen diplomatic and cultural relations between the two nations – is Találkozások/Incontri (‘Meetings’). Visitors to the festival can meet Hungarian and Italian celebrities in the tent, as a symbol of the friendship between the two countries.
