At the end of last year, the European Council and the European Parliament signed the European Union's new, 7th Environment Action Programme, which will come into effect in January; the Programme determines the EUs main environment and climate objectives until 2020. The adoption of the programme was preceded by a long process of negotiations between member states, the Council and the European Parliament.

In 2013, Hungarian agriculture preformed better than in previous years, as also indicated by the fact that it contributed to a significant extent, by almost 50 percent, to the 1.8 percent increase in GDP recorded in the third quarter of 2013, Minister for Rural Development Sándor Fazekas told Hungarian news agency MTI, reviewing the sector's performance in 2013.

Some 6 billion forints (20 million euros) has been spent over the past three years on developing living conditions on Hungary's rural farmsteads with a view to keeping farmsteads populated, but according to Minister of State Gyula Budai, funding must continue to be available for several more years within the framework of the Farmstead Development Programme before living conditions for the some 300 thousand Hungarians who live in farmsteads reaches the level of those living in municipalities.
