New Sure Start Children’s Centre Opened

Péter Garai, Deputy State Secretary for Social Inclusion of the Ministry of Human Resources, opened the Bódvalenke Sure Start Children’s Centre known as Freskófalu (Fresco Village) on Thursday. The Deputy State Secretary said in his speech that there are currently children’s centres in more than 110 localities throughout the country. Sure Start Children’s Centres are being established in the country’s most disadvantaged regions as well as in disadvantaged localities or districts with large Roma populations.
Minister of State Soltész hands over “Family-friendly Workplace” awards

State Minister for Social and Family Affairs Miklós Soltész handed over on Wednesday in Budapest “Family-friendly Workplace” awards to 43 institutions and enterprises in four categories. There were over 300 applicants for the awards, which were divided into four categories: government institutions, large, medium and small businesses. Each category had a special prize for one winner while the rest received a plaque denoting their achievement.

The government was able to achieve a paradigm change in child protection, Minister of State for Social and Family Affairs Miklós Soltész said on Wednesday during his opening remarks at a conference on the latest achievements of the Hungarian childcare system. He said the paradigm change was a result of the Government consolidating families – including adoptive and foster parents.

National Cultural Fund launches new pop music program

Hungary’s National Cultural Fund (NKA) will launch a new popular music support program under the name of former pop singer Tamás Cseh, Minister for Human Resources Zoltán Balog announced on Monday in Budapest. Balog said that the Tamás Cseh program will have a budget 400 million forints (EUR 1.31 million) this year and at least 100-100 million in the next two years. Hungary has annual copyright tax revenues of 4 billion forints on blank data storage devices such as DVDs or pen drives, and according to a law passed in 2013, 25% of this tax will be transferred from this year to NKA, allowing for additional initiatives as the Tamás Cseh program.

Performing arts institutions gain HUF 1.2 billion state subsidy

Hungarian performing art institutions falling into the “non-qualified” but registered category – mostly independent theatres and dance companies, as well as open-air and minority theatres, receiving theatres and production companies – have been granted a total state support of 1.23 billion forints (EUR 4 million) for the year 2014, the Ministry for Human Resources said in a statement.

The free breast cancer “screening night” held on 25 April was a success, Minister of State for Health Miklós Szócska said at a press conference in Budapest on Wednesday. He said that of the 6,250 women aged 45-65, 1,837 showed up at the screening and another 9,000 also took various other tests.

The 9th district of Budapest inaugurated on Thursday the renewed and expanded “Pixie House” nursery. The nursery had its existing 40 places refurbished and an additional 28 were created at a total cost of 168 million forints (EUR 547,000), Minister of State for Social and Family Affairs Miklós Soltész said at the inauguration.

Minister Balog inaugurates youth hostel in Kömlőd

Minister for Human Resources Zoltán Balog inaugurated a 34-bed youth hostel in the northern Hungarian village of Kömlőd on Tuesday. The hostel was built in the loft of the Calvinist church dormitory. During the religious service preceding the inauguration, Mr. Balog – a Calvinist pastor himself – said that young people need communities, adding that Hungarians belong to the community of all Hungarians living within the Carpathian basin while in religious communities the accent is on the community.
