The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is responsible for shaping and maintaining Hungary’s international relations, for representing national interests at a global level, and for achieving Hungary’s foreign affairs goals. Hungarian embassies and consulates operate under the direction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
A priority area for the Ministry is the shaping of Hungary’s European Union policy, the preparation, implementation and coordination of tasks related to the European Union presidency, and representation of Hungary’s interests at member-state level within the European Union. Through the assertion of national interests and the effective pursuit of the Government’s foreign affairs priorities, the overall goal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to make Hungary a strong and acknowledged player in the Central European Region, the European Union and in the international political and cultural arena.

Within the framework of shaping European Union affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs prepares, supervises and implements tasks and obligations arising from the Government’s European policy, and it develops the Hungarian Government’s official standpoint. It oversees bilateral relations with the European Union, and it directs cultural diplomacy. It is responsible for Hungary’s role in global international organisations, and for Hungary’s obligations in humanitarian and human rights fields. It supervises the development of Hungary’s standpoint on global economic affairs, sustainable development, energy security and other questions related to global challenges. The Ministry develops the Hungarian government’s standpoint on general foreign and security policy issues, with particular reference to our membership of the European Union and NATO.
In addition to heads of cabinet, government officials working in various specialist areas within the Ministry assist the Minister and Ministers of State in their work, taking part in the preparation of decisions and in implementation tasks. The Ministry’s main organisational units are the Ministerial Cabinet, the Offices of the Ministers of State, the Offices of Deputy Ministers of State, and specialist departments and units. Compared to other ministries, the Offices of Deputy Ministers of State are given a greater role in the Ministry’s organisational structure. Diplomats working in foreign representations under the direction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs represent and assert Hungarian foreign policy interests at an international level.
The Ministry of Interior coordinates affairs related to local government, law and order, immigration, citizenship and spatial planning in settlements.

The tasks of the Ministry of Interior related to law and order and public safety are diverse, and the Ministry sees the protection of life and property as its guiding principle. The Ministry places great emphasis on the maintenance of law and order, crime prevention and assistance for the victims of crime.
Through creation of the legislative background (e.g. the classification of crimes), the Ministry creates the legal environment within which its tasks can be carried out. The Ministry of Interior coordinates the work of law enforcement bodies, including those related to transport policing, border policing, the correctional system, the direction of civilian national security services (with the exception of intelligence gathering), and direction of the Coordination Centre for the Prevention of Organised Crime.
Recent extreme weather conditions have meant that disaster management has presented an increasingly difficult task, and for this reason protective measures and disaster prevention will be a priority aim for the Ministry of Interior.
The Ministry of Interior is also responsible for tasks related to immigration and citizenship, which include coordination of immigration security and policing, stipulating conditions for onward migration and foreign travel, and promoting the social integration of foreigners and refugees. In collaboration with local authorities and settlements, the Ministry of Interior oversees tasks related to settlement development, planning and the functioning of settlements, which also include construction affairs and the supervision of public space.
The Ministry for National Economy is responsible for the general planning of Hungarian economic policy and the implementation of strategy for the national economy. The Ministry deals with such vital fields related to the national economy as job creation, the creation of a family-friendly tax system, improving competitiveness, budget preparation, reducing the national debt and stimulation of economic growth.
The goal of the Ministry for National Economy is to promote – through the efficient use of available economic policy measures and European Union funds – the development of an innovative, knowledge-based economy which is competitive both within the single European market and the globalising world economy, which lends itself to rapid growth and which creates high added value.

Within the framework of formulating economic strategy, the Ministry for National Economy prepares short-, medium- and long-range plans for the stimulation of economic growth and increased competitiveness. It oversees public finances, plans the Budget and Appropriation Accounts, and cooperates in regulatory activities related to public finance. It develops financial policy strategy and frames the Hungarian tax system in order to ensure financial stability. In addition to this it prepares plans aimed at promoting job creation and employment, prepares plans related to questions of income, and liaises with various groups in society. The Ministry for National Economy prepares climate and energy policy plans with a view to sustainable development, and it supervises and directs Hungary’s international economic relations on the basis of a strategy for foreign economic affairs.
