The Ministry of Rural Development of Hungary is recruiting one candidate for the FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia (1068 Budapest, Benczúr u. 34.) with the following terms:

Duties and responsibilities

Under the administrative management of the Regional Representative for Europe and Central Asia and technical supervision of the Plant Production and Protection Officer, the Junior Professional Officer will provide technical support to FAO programs related to plant production and protection in the region.

Specifically the incumbent will:

  • Assist in conducting periodic reviews and appraisals of the current plant production and protection situation in the sub-region, through studies and surveys;
  • Assist in identification, formulation and implementation of plant production (including seed policy and seed systems) and protection development programs and projects;
  • Assist in implementation of projects dealing with the strengthening of plant production (including sustainable intensification and diversification of cropping systems, breeding, use and conservation of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA), seed production and policy) and plant protection in the sub-region;
  • Assist in arranging national and regional training on actions required for the support and the implementation of relevant international conventions and agreements, in particular the IPPC, the Rotterdam Convention, the International Code of Conduct on the Distribution and Use of Pesticides, the IT-PGRFA, and the Global Plan of Action on PGRFA;
  • Contribute to publications and presentations related to plant production and protection.
  • Contribute to public relation activities (web development and updating), take notes and file documents as required for the abovementioned activities in the Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia;
  • Participate in the preparation and organization of international plant production and protection meetings, conferences, seminars and provide support in plant production and protection information networking, research and database management; and
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Candidates should fulfil the following requirements:

  • Have a university degree at M.Sc. or MA level in one of the following areas: Agriculture, Agronomy, Plant Breeding, Crop Physiology, Crop Protection or a closely related field;
  • Have at least one year of relevant professional working experience in the field of plant production or protection, preferably in an organization dealing with international affairs.;
  • Have a very good working knowledge of English, spoken and written with a capacity to write and edit working documents in English. A good working knowledge of Russian is an asset;
  • Possess excellent information technology skills, including word processing, database applications, presentation software and the Internet;
  • Have the ability to think strategically; to express ideas clearly; to work independently and in teams combined with cultural and gender sensitivity;
  • Have a strong commitment to development; an interest in adapting to varied physical and professional environments; and a desire to work with people of different language, national and cultural backgrounds; and
  • Respect the principles of the United Nations Charter and FAO's Mission Statement.

Terms:

Duration: Two Years Full time –non renewable contract
Gross salary: 300.000 Ft/month.
Earliest start: 08 June 2012.
