6 April 2014, Budapest

Good Evening!

Please allow me to greet you with thanks and respect and to say a few words to you now. First of all, when the results of the election became apparent, my first road led to György Szabad, the Speaker of the first democratically elected Parliament. To explain to the younger generation: it was he who led the negotiations of the Opposition Roundtable together with József Antall. Because, Ladies and Gentlemen, these elections were held in a free country, and in addition to paying my personal respects, it is important that we thank the generations that came before us for making it possible for us to hold elections in a free country today. We thank our parents and our grandparents for enduring communism and, when it became possible in 1990, for toppling it. Please allow me to also draw your attention to today's most uplifting and most important fact, because this is the first time that Hungarians living outside the country's borders have been able to vote together with us. We are grateful to the good Lord for allowing this to become reality.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Let us state with suitable modesty and dignity, as befits us that all doubt and uncertainty has been dispelled: we are victorious! And we have won in no small way: we have achieved such a comprehensive victory, the significance of which we cannot yet fully grasp here tonight. We cannot know whether we have deserved this sweeping victory – God will decide that – but that we have worked hard for it is beyond doubt. The votes are still being counted, but we can state one fact for certain: Fidesz and the Christian Democratic People's Party have achieved a European record; they have gained the highest level of support of all the political parties in Europe. This is a European record. This is a fact that gives us the right to say, and not just to say, but also to be proud of the fact that today Hungary is the most unified country in Europe.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We Hungarians have clearly declared: Hungary is once again a place where it is worth living, working and raising a family. We have declared that we will not turn back; our national cooperation has received overwhelming support. As such, the voters have clearly brought the debates of the past four years to a definitive close. They have reinforced the politics of job creation, the politics of supporting families and the politics of national sovereignty. They have said no to two things. First of all, they have said no to hatred and have sent the message that hatred is not a way forward. And, Ladies and Gentlemen, the Hungarians have also said no to leaving the European Union. They have reinforced the fact that Hungary belongs in the European Union, but only if it has a strong, national government.

And now let us express together our thanks to the many people involved. Let us express our thanks to the voters of Hungary, who went out to vote, irrespective of who they voted for, because by taking part in the elections they have stood up for Hungarian democracy. Thank you for doing so! Let us thank those who voted for the candidates and list of Fidesz and the Christian Democratic People's Party for their perseverance and dedication. Let us thank our partners, the volunteers and helpers, for their enduring efforts; more than 100 thousand people have worked to enable us to celebrate together here tonight. And, Ladies and Gentlemen, let us thank every member of our families who have stood by us with patience. Everyone has had to withstand and tolerate a lot, but perhaps my wife had to endure the most. Thank you!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am proud to have been given a commission to continue our work and I promise you that I will be working every single day to ensure that Hungary is again a wonderful place. We are all standing on the threshold of a new and magnificent era. I invite the citizens of Hungary to step through that doorway into this new and magnificent era together. I also know, Ladies and Gentlemen, that we have only been able to achieve what we have together, and I know that we can only be successful together, and what's more, I also know that it is only together that we can make Hungary great again.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We are victorious, and in our case that means, since we have won, that from now on we must begin working even harder. But we have also learned from the past four years that we have the strength to complete this task. I am grateful to everyone, thank you for your support!

Go, Hungary! Go, Hungarians!
