During the past four years, the Government has strengthened the police force, and there is now a permanent police presence in every single town and village throughout the country, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said at a swearing-in ceremony for 1,400 junior police officers and fire-fighters on Saturday.

We have created laws that provide a tough but just environment for the purpose of protecting law-abiding people, the Prime Minister told the gathering. Corrupt officers have been rooted out of the police force, the Prime Minister said, promising that the Government would continue to preserve the purity of the force.

There are now an extra 3,500 police officers on the streets, he pointed out, adding that the combination of new laws and the modernisation of police equipment had brought about an improvement in the force's performance. At the same time, it was necessary to have a well-trained and efficiently operating law enforcement organisation, the Prime Minister said.

"We are now not only doing better with regard to the economy, but also with relation to the law and public safety", Mr. Orbán concluded.
