Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller called for speeding up the construction of the South Stream gas pipeline, following a meeting on Wednesday.
The parties held talks in Budapest and agreed that the current situation in Ukraine has proved that the gas pipeline is key from the point of view of security of gas supplies for Europe, therefore the construction of the pipeline must be accelerated.
The South Stream pipeline will deliver Russian gas to Europe via the Black Sea. It will bypass Ukraine, whose disputes with Moscow have interrupted gas deliveries to Europe several times in recent years.
The Prime Minister Orbán and Mr Miller also discussed the new development that Austria has joined the project.
