In his letter, Orban referred to Kohl as a statesman focusing all his effort to make the world a better place, one who has the courage to question presuppositions of his age. Kohl has demonstrated that goodwill is not enough in public affairs: a clear head and courage are also needed to meet our goals, the letter said. Kohl had a clear vision of a historic chance for Europe and was able to find new ways where others stood helpless, the prime minister said in his letter.

Deeply Respected Herr Chancellor, Dear Helmut!

There is an old wisdom that says, what we receive from life is decided in the long run by what it finds within us.

I have come to know you as a statesman who does not accept the world as it is, but instead works to the best of his abilities to make it better; as one who dares to question the preconceptions of his age. I have also learnt from you that good intentions are not enough when it comes to public affairs: one must have a clear head and courage to achieve one's goals. You saw clearly Europe's great, historic opportunity and were capable of making headway where others could make no progress. This was, for my generation and me personally, an emancipating feeling, and one which has accompanied me throughout my career.

We Hungarians view you as our ally, who helped Central Europe, and within it Hungary, to put an end to the injustice of the post-Yalta world order. You have shown your sympathy towards the Hungarian nation not only in words, but also through action, and for this Hungarians shall always be grateful to you.

It is my great honour that on the occasion of this special anniversary I have the privilege of passing on to you the appreciation and best wishes of the people of Hungary.

I wish you good health and much strength, and trust that we shall soon have the opportunity to meet again.

With my sincere respect and appreciation,

Viktor Orbán
