25 years ago, on 27 September 1987, 181 intellectuals met in a tent set up on current Deputy Speaker of Parliament Sándor Lezsák’s back yard. This meeting was a key step towards the transition to democracy.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán spoke at the 25th anniversary of the "Lakitelek Meeting", saying that people fighting for the rise of the Hungarian nation can only be successful if they follow the mentality of those who contributed to regime change. He stated that Hungary is part of Western culture and the European economy, but it is not enough to just "copy" the West, Hungary has to find its own path to become successful.

Sándor Lezsák, organiser and host of the Lakitelek Meeting, recalled that 25 years ago it was a day when they not only criticised the regime, but also sped up transition. He said that in the meeting’s declaration they envisaged today’s Hungary, which became complete with the new Fundamental Law.
