State Secretary for Foreign Affairs Péter Szijjártó, who is also Government Commissioner for Chinese–Hungarian trade relations, inaugurated the Hungarian consulate general in Hong Kong on Thursday.

Hungary has reopened its mission in the world's major financial and trade hub with the largest density of company headquarters after five years, Péter Szijjártó said, adding that Hong Kong is Hungary's fifth major trading partner in Asia, but the closure of the mission 5 years ago, forced by budget constraints, has hurt economic cooperation badly. The reopened mission is expected to play an important role in reversing this trend and Hungary's exports in electronics and premium category foods and wines will be the key tools in that reversal.

The State Secretary regards turning Hungary into a major logistics centre for Hong Kong's exports to Europe as an important external economic policy goal, noting that Hungary is Hong Kong's top trade partner within the Central European region. An important mission of the consulate will be promoting Hungary to prospective visitors from Hong Kong within, for instance, the field of tourism.
