Defence Minister Unveils Hungarian Soldiers’ Memorial

On Sunday, January 15 Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende attended the unveiling ceremony of a World War II monument in the town of Belényes (Beius), in the south of Bihor County, Romania. The memorial commemorates those ten Hungarian soldiers (‘honvéd’, ie. ‘homeguards’), who were wounded in action at the battles around the town in 1944 and died a hero’s death in a military hospital. The ceremony was organized by the Country Youth Association, the representatives of the established churches of Belényes, and the Bihor County and Belényes organizations of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (DAHR).

On 17 January 2012, the European Commission decided to launch three infringement procedures against Hungary. The Hungarian government takes note of the Commission's decision to examine the compliance of certain Hungarian laws with the acquis communautaire following the procedures laid down in the Treaty. Hungary regards this as an opportunity to engage in a technical dialogue based on verifiable facts with the competent authority, the European Commission, acting as the guardian of the Treaties.

One of the first new laws to be discussed in the Parliament's spring session is the proposed bill on waste management, which will be presented by the Minister for Rural Development. The new law will create the conditions for uniform, efficient and environmentally friendly waste management, and provides incentives for a new approach to the issue. The bill clarifies the definition of waste, and determines in detail how waste should be handled. It squarely determines the tasks and responsibilities of both market participants and the public, as well as the advantages gained. It clearly defines who is the producer and receiver of the waste, i.e. those involved in waste management: collection, transport, salvaging, processing.

Quick Decision Expected on Handling the Malév Case

The Ministry of National Development acknowledges and will respect the European Commission’s decision ruling certain loans and capital increases granted to Malév between 2007-2010 as prohibited government aid. The ministry has prepared various scenarios for managing the situation, which will be updated and finalised with knowledge of the accurate content of the decision. The Government is expected to discuss the ministry’s recommendations regarding Malév’s future at its 16 January 2012 session. The operation of a national airline centred in Budapest and ensuring efficient enforcement of the national economic interests remains a priority objective. Maintenance of Malév’s uninterrupted operation is indispensable for the implementation of this effort.
