The New Penal Code will enter into force on 1 July 2013; it was passed by the Hungarian Parliament on 25 June 2012 after several months of wide-ranging social and professional consultations and political debates. The new Penal Code also offers an effective response to the changes in crime patterns that have occurred in the past thirty years, since the entry into force of the Criminal Code currently in effect.

The upswing in the number of employed which has been a trend for almost two years remained intact in the period of March-May 2012 as well compared to the same period of the previous year – the latest release of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH) concludes. The number of employed among the population aged 15-74 years during the past one year has increased by an unprecedented degree, by 63 000, from 3 million 786 thousand one year ago to 3 million 849 thousand. The rate of employment consequently increased to 50.2 percent. The number of employed among the population aged 15-64 years was up by 58 000, from 3 million 753 thousand one year ago to 3 million 811 thousand and the rate of employment thereby increased to 56.7 percent.

The Parliament has adopted a bill with 330 votes, without abstention and counter-votes guaranteeing special protection for the cultural property borrowed from abroad for exhibitions in Hungary. The Economic and Financial Affairs Council of the European Union (ECOFIN) delivered its decision on 22 June to abolish the temporary suspension of commitments from the Cohesion Fund -- which verdict the Council had been passed on 13 March and which would have entered into effect from 1 January 2013. In the past couple of months in the midst of a protracted financial-economic crisis the government implemented structural reforms by which state budget balance was made sustainable and general government debt was also set on a downward path. Due to the fiscal trend reversal, the deficit will certainly and steadily remain below 3 percent, consequently next year the Hungarian economy will begin to expand on the basis of firm fundamentals. The Budget Bill of 2013 submitted to parliament on 15 June by the government sets a deficit target of 2.2 percent which – via one of the most stable fiscal management policies of Europe – will adequately respond to the challenges imposed by the debt crisis.

At the request of the Ministry of Public Administration and Justice, the Irish Department of Justice and Equality officially confirmed the information previously learned from news released by the press that, based on the decision of the Supreme Court of Ireland, Francis Ciaran Tobin cannot be extradited to Hungary, and the custody of the man who caused an accident resulting in the deaths of two children in Hungary on 9 April 2000 has been terminated.
