Employment at record high

Employment increased further in Hungary: in June-August 2013, 67 thousand more people were in employment compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. The number of people in employment aged 15-74 years hit a historic high of 3 million 981 thousand. This figure is 1.7 percent higher than that of the same period of 2012, while the employment rate improved to 52.2 percent among those aged 15-74 years.

According to the flash report of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH), in August the volume of retail sales increased by 1.5 percent year-on-year, exceeding the 1.2 percent growth registered in July. Increasing retail sales are a consequence of higher wages in real terms, improving employment and recovering consumer confidence.

Delphi Automotive expands its plant in Tatabánya

On Wednesday, automotive components manufacturer Delphi inaugurated its 8000 square meter new production hall, which will double the company’s Tatabánya unit’s production and will create a hundred new jobs. The expansion is worth HUF 3.4 billion (EUR 11.3 million) of which HUF 686 million (EUR 2.3 million) was provided from non-repayable Hungarian and EU funds.

The Hungarian Government, as the largest owner of Croatia’s most significant foreign investor, MOL, reviewed at its cabinet meeting the situation that has evolved in relation to the company’s Croatian investments. According to the contract between the State of Croatia and MOL, the company has fulfilled its responsibilities in full and in the past years has invested nearly EUR 3 billion. In contrast to this, the Croatian party has failed to or has only partly fulfilled its responsibilities.

Hungary’s foreign trade posts significant surplus again

In July 2013, the volume of exports and imports increased by 7.4 percent and 6.4 percent, respectively, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, thus foreign trade posted a surplus of EUR 448 million in the seventh month of the year. As a result of the Government’s investor-friendly economic policy, recently implemented large investment projects are expected to generate a foreign trade surplus for the entire year of 2013 which will exceed last year’s figure.
