In this week’s two-day sitting, the Hungarian parliament will consider the following bills: the proposed cardinal Act on Parliament; the amendment to the cardinal Act on the Organisation of Courts and the Judiciary (in the light of the Venice Commission’s comments); amendment to the cardinal Act on Data Protection (in the light of the European Commission’s recommendations); and the proposed resolution on government measures to curb excessive domestic debt from foreign currency denominated loans.
An amendment proposed by Fidesz would mean that members of private pension schemes returning to the state pension scheme would receive tax benefits; a KDNP measure would tighten the rules on food marketing and increase fines for violations; 29th June is proposed as the Remembrance Day for “kulak” victims of persecution.
A proposed resolution adopting the report of the committee of inquiry into privatisation of sugar factories would lead to the more effective representation of Hungarian interests related to the sugar quota system at EU level, preparing for the planned ending of the EU sugar quota system. There will be a full debate on the proposed amendment to the Act on Self-determination of Information and Freedom of Information aimed at correcting deficiencies in data protection identified by the European Commission. The aim of the amendment is to increase the independence of the President of the Authority on National Data Protection and Freedom of Information.
Several amending measures will be voted on, including those on the protection of non-smokers, on local taxes, on aid to borrowers of foreigner currency denominated loans and some laws on migration.
The debate on the proposed cardinal Act on Parliament and changes to House Rules will start on Tuesday. Following this, there will be a debate on amendments to the Act on Organisation of Courts and the Judiciary, and the Legal Status and Remuneration of Judges (in the light of comments received from the Venice Commission.
