The final meeting of the Environmental Council to take place during the Hungarian Presidency was held on June 21. As a result of the successful work of the Presidency and in accordance with our plans, Europe has made significant progress in several important areas within the field of environmental protection.

The Union is providing 210 million Euros for the immediate assistance of vegetable producers - announced Commissioner Dacian Cioloş. The degree of compensation will be equal to 50% of the average vegetable selling price for 2007-2010. Members of the TÉSZ (Producers and Marketers Organisations) could acquire levels of up to 70% taking into account their Operative Programme.
The European Union will compensate damages incurred by vegetable producers. At least 30 percent of lost income will be compensated from the joint budget in the case of those fruit and vegetable producers who have suffered damages because of the German E. coli epidemic. Speaking on Kossuth Radio, Minister of Rural Development Sándor Fazekas revealed that at the meeting the committee had recommended an EU budget of 150 million Euros, but that this sum may increase if necessary. The exact details will be made public within the next few days.
As rotating President of the Agricultural and Fisheries Council, The Minister of Rural Development has convened a meeting of his EU colleagues for Tuesday June 7 in Luxembourg to analyse and discuss the effects of the German E. coli epidemic on the vegetable and fruit sector.
The Agricultural Ministers of the EU labelled the E. coli bacteria infection a European problem at the informal meeting of the Agriculture Council held on 31 May 2011 in Debrecen. The Hungarian Presidency volunteered to convene an extraordinary meeting of the Council to discuss the cucumber crisis if necessary.
At present there are no contaminated Spanish vegetables in Hungary, all tests so far have proved negative - announced Endre Kardeván, Under Secretary of the Ministry for Rural Development responsible for Food Chain Supervision and Agricultural Administration, on Tuesday in Debrecen.
Hungary, with the environmental provisions of its new Constitution, is providing strong background support for the operation of organisations such as IMPEL (the European Union Network for the Implementation and Enforcement of Environmental Law), which was created to apply and enforce the EU’s environmental legislation – said Sándor Fazekas, Minister for Rural Development, at the international organisation's 7th General Assembly. The event – in which environmental protection bodies from thirty countries were represented – was organised as part of Hungary’s EU presidency.
