Parliament has defined the concept of a farmer's market and included it in the Hungarian Trade Act. Agricultural and food products that are cultivated or produced in the given county or within an area of 40 kilometres may be sold at the local market. Producers from throughout the country may bring their wares to Budapest for sale. The new regulations come into force on January 1, 2012.
The Government has passed the 2009 and 2010 Parliamentary Reports on gene technology activities and the strategy regarding their utilization in agriculture and food production.
While some member states are lobbying to do away with the agricultural support system, at the Luxembourg meeting of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council Sándor Fazekas agreed with his French counterpart that the level of support provided to farmers must not decrease after 2014.
Hungary must become a self-sufficient producer of sugar, and so the Ministry is doing everything in its power to keep sugar-beet farmers in good spirits – said György Czerván at the press conference following the session of the Sugar and Isoglucose Product Path Committee at the Ministry of Rural Development. The State Secretary for Agricultural Economy stressed that farmers would receive the almost 2 billion Forints in support for this year despite the fact that the government has earmarked 800 million Forints of the support quota because the national budget is in a difficult situation.

Farmers will receive 280 billion Forints in Single Area Payment Scheme (SAPS) funds for the current year, 50 billion more than last year. The payment of half this sum, around 135 billion Forints, will begin today – stated Sándor Fazekas at the joint press conference of the Ministry of Rural Development and the Agricultural and Rural Development Agency (MVH). Péter Palkovics stressed that payment of special milk support would also begin in December, within the framework of which 2700 milk farmers will receive payments from a fund of 13.5 billion Forints.
Parliament has passed a resolution requesting that local governments ban the use of genetically modified organisms in agriculture and farming within their areas of administration, so joining a Croatian initiative.
