The Goose Liver Festival is being held for the first time in Budapest, in the beautiful Castle District. In addition to various versions of this delicacy, there will be Hungarian wines, cultural programmes, dance performances and concerts.
For more than one hundred years fried goose liver has been a much-loved element in Hungarian cuisine, and the unequalled quality of Hungarian goose liver is famed throughout the world. Alongside various dishes incorporating the speciality, visitors to the festival can sample Hungary’s best-known varieties of wine − including the famous Tokaj − as well as other Hungarian culinary delights. Live concerts, dance performances, traditional games and children’s programmes will enhance the festival atmosphere. Minister for Rural Development, Sándor Fazekas is the festival patron.
The incomparable surroundings of Buda’s Castle District have become a regular venue for festivals. In May, there was a pálinka festival, showcasing hundreds of varieties of Hungarian pálinka, a spirit distilled from fruit.
On 20 August, Hungary’s annual celebration of the foundation of the State, another traditional event will be held in the Castle District: the Mesterségek Ünnepe Festival of Crafts, which is Hungary’s largest cultural and culinary fair. This year there will also be the Promenade of Hungarian Flavours.
The first Castle District Beer Festival will take place this year on 25-28 August. Around one hundred varieties of Hungarian and other beers − well-known and less well-known specialities − will be featured during the four-day event in the Castle District.
The Wine and Champagne Festival, Wine Exhibition and Fair will take place on 12-16 September. Fifteen countries, 220 wineries and 5,000 types of wine will be represented. The cream of Hungarian wineries will offer their finest wines and, in addition to Hungarian varieties, many foreign wines will be showcased by famous wine merchants.
As has already been reported on kormany.hu, one of the Government’s highlighted projects is the reconstruction of the Buda Castle Bazaar monument. This part of Budapest’s World Heritage Site on the West Bank of the Danube will be restored, after decades of dereliction. Once again this beautiful structure will offer visitors complete panoramas of the city, and add to Hungary’s tourist and economic life.
