The draft Waste Management Act will soon reach the government, and subsequently, parliament. The Ministry primarily recommends the reduction of the generation of waste – announced Zoltán Illés in Tiszaújváros.

In the words of the State Secretary for Environmental Affairs of the Ministry of Rural Development, "the new law provides incentives for producers and distributors to spend less money on expensive packaging materials."

Zoltán Illés added, "The bill places the most emphasis on selective collection. The goal is for the population to only pay for waste that they do not collect selectively." The State Secretary also drew attention to the fact that the setting up of the full system requires at least 2-3 years, although similar systems are already in place in several settlements.

"The proposed bill regards the collection and recycling of waste as being the responsibility of the state. In accordance with this fact, only companies of which at least 51 percent are owned by the state or by local governments will be able to participate in public services from 2013. The new law focuses primarily on the recycling of waste and on selective collection, instead of on depositing and incineration", added Zoltán Illés.
