Certificates recognising the nation's Hungaricums will we awarded for the first time at the Hungarian Ball, which will be held in the Operetta theatre in Budapest tonight. "The Hungaricum Ball is a celebration of the national treasures of the Hungarian peoples", Minister for Rural Development and Chairman of the Hungaricum Committee Sándor Fazekas said at the press conference organised in anticipation of the event.

The Minister reminded the press that the latest treasures to have been included on the current list of 14 Hungaricums include Gyulai sausage, soda water, the Hungarian operetta, the Kassai horseback archery method and the life's work of Ferenc Puskás.

Mr. Fazekas explained that when deciding on Hungaricums, the Committee examines the full scale of tradition and culture in the case of proposals that arrive from the preservers of Hungarian values and various associations. Treasures that go beyond the scope of settlement, county and cross-border value repositories eventually reach the Hungaricum Committee, and may then ve included in the national repository, he added.

László Zsolt Szabó said that one goal was for public media to become a community media, adding that the airing of the Gala was important to everyone.

Mr. Dobos said that viewers would have several opportunities to watch the one-hour summary of the Gala on Duna TV on 23 and 26 December, which accordingly will be available to viewers within the whole Carpathian Basin and abroad.

The Gala's organiser-director Miklós Gábor Kerényi stressed that the Hungarian operetta is also among those receiving awards. The Gala will include performances of famous Hungarian operettas by members of the Hungarian Operetta Theatre and by popular Hungarian musicians from around Europe.
