On Sunday, 4 November, Hungary commemorates the anniversary of the defeat of the 1956 Revolution and Freedom Fight. On the Day of Remembrance, we pay tribute to those heroes who stood by the ideal of freedom – even at the cost of their lives.
The programme begins at 8 a.m. in the House of Terror Museum, where candles and flowers will be placed in remembrance at the wall of victims. Those wishing to pay their respects can also do so at the graves of heroes of ’56. At 6 p.m. the Flame of the Revolution in Kossuth Lajos tér (in front of Parliament) will be reduced to a flicker, and then at 7 p.m. the national day of mourning will be brought to a close with a memorial concert in St. Stephen's Basilica. The event will be attended by representatives of state protocol, accredited members of diplomatic corps in Hungary and representatives of '56 veterans’ organisations.
