On the 30th of December 2011. Government Commissioner Dr. András Levente Gál held a meeting with representatives from the Jewish Heritage of Hungary Public Endowment (MAZSÖK) and the Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities (MAZSIHISZ), to discuss restitution payments to Holocaust survivors.

MAZSÖK has still not managed to completely settle the accounts as stipulated in the restitution agreement concluded between it and the Hungarian Government in 2007; this is due to MAZSÖK’s foreign partner organisation (the Claims Conference) failing to fulfil the accounting requirements specified in the agreement.

Both Gusztáv Zoltai (co-chairman of MAZSÖK’s former Board of Trustees, and managing director of MAZSIHISZ) and György Szabó (chairman of the recently appointed Board of Trustees) agreed that fundamental amendment of the agreement’s terms and conditions was inevitable.

Accordingly, the parties shall jointly amend the restitution agreement, in order to simplify MAZSÖK’s accounting obligations. This will consequently make it possible for restitution payments for Holocaust survivors living in Hungary to be transferred to MAZSÖK’s bank account in the first half of January.

Issued by: Dr. András Levente Gál, Government Commissioner, and the Jewish Heritage of Hungary Public Endowment (MAZSÖK)
