Irish driver ready to serve prison term, says Deputy Prime Minister

Francis Ciaran Tobin, an Irishman previously convicted for killing two children in a road accident in Hungary, is prepared to serve his prison term, Deputy Prime Minister Tibor Navracsics said at a press briefing today.

Tobin said he is prepared to begin serving his sentence in Hungary, but requested the possibility of continuing his prison term in Ireland. Tibor Navracsics has informed the Irish Minister of Justice that he would guarantee this personally.

The Deputy Prime Minister added that the letter of the Irish Minister of Justice demonstrates that, unlike Viviane Reding, the decision-making of the Irish authorities is not affected by the alleged endangered independence of the Hungarian jurisdiction.
