Extremists on the "left and right" should stop aggression on the streets in connection with a planned memorial to the victims of Hungary's German occupation, minister of state Bence Retvari said on Wednesday.

Retvari said he trusted that this issue could be resolved peacefully and that stoking up emotions and inciting hatred should be avoided.

He added that it was political leaders rejected by voters in Sunday's general election who started and created political hysteria.

On Tuesday evening, people gathering for a flashmob organised by the leftist Democratic Coalition (DK) removed some of the fencing around the construction site. They repeated this action on Wednesday. Police did not interfere.

The opposition Socialist Party has launched a local referendum to help decide whether the local council of central Budapest's 5th district should stop the construction of the memorial.
