One of the world’s state-of-the-art IT systems having the highest data transmission capacity may be implemented in Budapest Minister of Development Zsuzsanna Németh announced during the execution of an agreement between the Geneva-based European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and Wigner Research Centre for Physics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences on 4 May, 2012 in Budapest.

The optical network to be built will establish ultra rapid contact between CERN in Geneva and the Budapest data centre currently under construction. The data volume to be transmitted by the system alone matched Hungary’s total online traffic, Zsuzsanna Németh explained.

The Hungarian bid was selected as the best of twenty eight competing applications submitted to CERN. This was an evidence of the high standard of preparation and underlying expertise incorporated in the submission, the Minister highlighted.

The asset investment worth about HUF 40 billion will provide Hungary with a unique competitive advantage in the information technological, innovation and scientific prestige. Cooperation with CERN, a pioneer in Internet technology, would promote technology and knowledge transfer in the areas concerned, she added.

Implementation of the ultra broad banks network was the best example of cooperation between the public and business sectors the Minister stressed. The WIGNER Data Centre to be built by the end of 2012 will have a key role in processing Large Hadron Collider data, including Higgs boson research.
