On 23 April 2013, the European Energy Exchange (EEX) held its first auction of the last marketable Hungarian EUA emission units listed in the second trading period of the emission trading system of the European Union.

The 2,587,500 EUA units were sold on the EEX spot market at an auction price of 2.76 EUR each. The revenue from the sale amounts to 7,141,500 EUR. Bids for a total of 6,615,000 EUA units were submitted, thus demand exceeded by over two and a half times the quantity offered for auction. Fifteen companies participated in the auction.

On 11 April 2013, the Ministry of National Development concluded a supplementary agreement with the Leipzig based European Energy Exchange (EEX). Pursuant to the agreement, following the contract of November 2012, a total of 5,174,500 EUA units are offered for sale on the EEX spot market in two new stages. The remaining 2,587,000 EUA units will be offered for sale at the second exchange auction on 25 April 2013, between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
