Hungary’s new proportional electronic toll system generated revenue of more than 2.8 billion forints (EUR 9.5m) in the first week of its operation, the National Development Ministry’s state secretary said on Monday.

Revenue from the e-toll, which is levied on vehicles over 3.5 tonnes based on the distance travelled, is targeted at 75 billion forints in the second half of this year, Pál Völner told a press conference.

He said the number of locations where truck drivers can buy pre-paid tickets or top up their pre-payment accounts was expected to rise from 800 at present to 1,500. Some 20,000 vehicles now have the accounts, but the number is set to reach 100,000, he added.

Payment of e-tolls are checked at mobile checkpoints and electronic gates on highways, dual carriageways and along major national roads.
