On 26 January 2011, Minister of State for info-communication Dr Zsolt Nyitrai elaborated on the objectives set in this field before the Industry, Research and Energy Committee (ITRE) of the European Parliament in Brussels. The presidency programme is aimed primarily at the improvement of the information society and laying the foundations of a single digital market. Hungary is ready to take an active role in the first Digital Agenda Assembly to be held in June 2011. The standing committee agreed with the priorities set for the field by the Hungarian Presidency.
Minister of State Dr. Zsolt Nyitrai emphasised: Hungary wishes to run the presidency in a vigorous, dynamic and consensus-seeking manner, in close co-operation with the European Parliament. The Digital Agenda, approved last year, gives the overall framework that determines the efforts of the Hungarian Presidency in the area of electronic info-communication.
Recently, the European Commission proposed the approval of the European Network and Information Security Agency’s new mandate, the extension of its operation, as well as its strengthening and modernisation. Hungary made efforts at making fast progress in this matter and the proposal could be approved during its Presidency, the Minister of State added.
The second legislative initiative that falls within the period of the Hungarian Presidency is related to the radio spectrum policy programme. If properly available, managed and used, radio spectrum may contribute greatly to digital market integration, fast wireless services, economy boosting and upturn, the creation of high-quality jobs and the long-term competitiveness of the European Union. The Hungarian Presidency intended to make considerable progress in the approval of the legislative proposal and supported the elaboration of the European Union’s united stand for the ITU World Radio Communication Conference held in 2012, the Minister of State explained.
