The World Road Association - founded more than 100 years ago - held its annual Council Meeting in Lucerne, Switzerland between 23-25 October 2012. The delegation of Hungary, one of the founding countries of the Association, was led by First Delegate Dr. Pál Völner, Minister of State for Infrastructure.
The Council represents the highest decision making body of the Association, determining the main strategic themes of the road management and the operation tools of the organisation, including the positions of the President and the Vice-Presidents, as well as the technical committees and financial means.
Exceptional importance was given to the Lucerne-meeting by items on the agenda, such as
- the evaluation of the expenses of the last (XXIV.) World Road Congress held in Mexico City in 2011,
- the evaluation of the work done during the years 2011-2012, including the financial results,
- the preparation of the next (XIV) International Winter Road Congress to be held in Andorra, between 4-7 February 2014,
- the preparation of the next (XXV.) World Road Congress in Seoul in 2015,
- the election of the new President, the Vice-Presidents and the members of the Executive Commission,
- the adoption of new member-countries (Bahrein, Malta).
Oscar de Buen Richkarday, candidate of Mexico was elected as the new President of the Association for the period 2013-2016. The new Vice-Presidents are from Australia, Austria and Burkina-Faso.
Hungarian delegates have been contributing to the work in several Technical Committees of the Association, e.g. Road Safety and Terminology (editing the Multi-lingual on-line Dictionary and Lexicon).
