The Council of the EU ministers of interior was held in Brussels on Thursday. The Hungarian delegation was led by Parliamentary State Secretary Károly Kontrát.

At the meeting, the member states discussed the November 25 declaration of the European Commission on free movement and residence. It was proven that after the Middle-Eastern European countries joined the EU, internal mobility brought with it more positive effects than hardships for the Western European states.

In practice, Hungary also experiences cases of abuse such as the phenomenon of fake marriages and is determined to combat them. At the same time, however, Hungary, along with numerous other member states, stands up for the fundamental rights of free movement and residence. As the current President of the V4 countries, Hungary announced the November 29 joint declaration of the V4 Ministers of Foreign Affairs, which also underlined the same issues.

The participants also discussed the fight against terrorism and the question of Romania and Bulgaria joining the Schengen area, the report on the Mediterranean region, West-Balkan visa-liberation monitoring and the topic of the post-Stockholm program.
