Hungarian teachers’ salaries rose twice within the last six months – by 34 percent last September and by an additional 8-10,000 forints (EUR 26-33) in January. These Government decisions show that the state regards the quality education of children as a high priority. This duty – undertaken in concert with families – is clearly visible in the renewal of the education system and the increased moral and material recognition of the work of teachers.
The biggest pay rise in the education system since 1990 guarantees a continuous increase for all educators by law for the next four years. Also, because the pay rise is linked to the minimum wage, increases in the minimum wage helps teachers further and improves their financial position.
The predictable increase in wages also means that teachers have a clear career path and fair remuneration. 2014 will be an unprecedented year for them, as with the pay rise this September their wages will have risen three times during a single year.
The figures show that while before the current wage system was put in place teachers’ wages were in the 130,000-230,000 forint (EUR 420-742) bracket, their salaries are in the 230,000-310,000 forint (EUR 742-1,000) range.
The Government’s measures clearly show that the state respects and duly rewards the country’s teachers and is relying on them to be instrumental in the long-term renewal of Hungary.
