The Békés County Minorities' Day is organised at the end of every year by the County Council of Békés. Individual contributions to bettering the life of minorities living in the county are recognised at the event. This year, the awards were presented by Deputy State Secretary responsible for National Minority and Civil Society Affairs Csaba Latorcai, on 6th December in Csabacsűd.
The Deputy State Secretary for National Minority and Civil Society Affairs Latorcai, saluted the country's minorities, expressed his appreciation for their work and underlined in his opening speech that “the results of that last census (2011) has clearly proven that administration in Hungary is not dominated by fear that makes individuals and communities afraid of unveiling their identity. On the contrary, the number of stating themselves to be individuals belonging to nationalities has increased by 50% compared to the results of the previous census conducted in 2001. The legal frameworks, practical solutions, and the system-supporting educational and cultural autonomy established by the current democratic government have played a significant role in achieving such an improvement of the receptive social climate in Hungary.”
Within the framework of this event, representatives of Roma, Polish, German, Romanian, Serbian and Slovakian minorities meet with County Council Representatives in a different settlement each year – this year in Csabacsűd.
“Those awarded today are all entitled to be acknowledged with undoubted pride and recognition – both minorities and Hungarians. With their precious activities, they have contributed to the enrichment of their own community as well as to the improvement of the culture of the whole society”, the Deputy State Secretary said in his speech.
