Hungary’s largest sporting event this summer, the centennial MOL World Fencing Championships, are to begin on Monday in Budapest. The Ministry of National Economy is sponsoring the event with 180 million forints. Organisers are expecting 1100 participants from 106 countries, including more than 160 wheelchair fencers.
This year’s competition is also a centennial event, since the International Fencing Federation (FIE) was established in 1913, exactly 100 years ago. President of the FIE Alisher Usmanov stated that it is fitting that this year’s World Championships should take place in Budapest, a city that has such a rich tradition in fencing.
