On Thursday, the Budapest Military Hospital opened a clinical simulation unit for the training of medical personnel, where they can learn treating injuries ranging from everyday trauma to the most extreme battlefield wounds.
At the opening of the new unit, Defence Minister Csaba Hende said that the unit will enable the training of doctors and nurses, who can thereafter be deployed in war zones, disaster areas or foreign missions while at the same time serving the training needs of the entire Hungarian medical sector.
Mr. Hende said that when the current administration took over from the Socialist-Liberal government, the hospital inherited the entire spectrum of healthcare and military problems, exacerbated by corruption and a confused hierarchy. He added that while the most critical problems have since been solved, there is still a lot of work to be done. He said the number of patients treated by the hospital has increased by 17 percent while the financial deficit has been almost halved. He also said the upcoming tasks would be to improve the trauma unit and reduce waiting times.
Minister of State for Healthcare Miklós Szócska said that the hospital had undertaken a pioneering role by hosting to the simulation unit, which will benefit the entire Hungarian healthcare system. He also said that the current Government inherited a medical training system that has been severely compromised by the previous administration. Mr. Szócska said the new unit had been established at a cost of 62 million forints (EUR 202,000).
