Dear Participants, Dear Supporters and Coaches, Dear Guests!

I am here to bring the greetings and best wishes of his Excellency János Martonyi, Foreign Minister of Hungary who was glad to accept the patronage of this event. Unfortunately, he is not able to be here with you because of his other engagements.

First of all I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our international guests. I hope they will be a pleasant time in Hungary. Thank you for coming to our BIMUN 2012.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the organisers. As a diplomat, I can realize how much work there is behind such a grand event.

I am personally happy to be with you because this is not my first BIMUN event.

Nowadays we can often hear complaints that the youth are not interested in community affairs, they are irresponsible, superficial and careless. And they are also materialistic, selfish, and lazy.

Dear participants, you are the living example to show that these complaints are simply not true. You have demonstrated that „there is no reason to worry” and that our future is „secure” because future generations are willing to think responsibly and they are active, open and enterprising. And care about important things of common interest.

I consider BIMUN 2012 as a significant event for objective reasons; moreover, as I said I am also attached to this event for personal reasons.

I have worked for the UN Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary for several years. While working there I understood how important the World Organisation was. One can say that the UN might be slow to act, or too complicated to work with. But at the end of the day, we all realise that this is the ultimate organisation to turn to with the most pressing or most serious issues.

I believe that there is no need for me to talk about how important the UN is, and how many benefits it provides us. For all nations all over the world. You are surely aware of what issues the UN focuses on these days, what are the ongoing debates about, and which issues require decisions to be made sooner than later.

Having been a civil servant for two decades I know that we need people like you.

National and international civil service needs capable and dedicated people. Who believe that there are issues in the public domain that are even exciting and rewarding to work on and certainly issues that peoples’ lives depend on.

National and international civil service needs young people like you who in crisis situations can make mountains move, who are devoted, intelligent and professional.

Young people like you will be ready to devote the time and energy necessary for achieving the goals, which will serve the welfare of a larger community.

Ladies and Gentlemen!

Unfortunately, Minister Martonyi was not able to come to this event, but I can assure you that he fully supports this initiative and considers it an important event.

We hope that the Budapest International Model United Nations will be just as successful this year as it was last year and we are also looking forward to meeting you again next spring.

It is my pleasure to declare the Budapest Model United
Nations 2012 open and wish you a very exciting and meaningful competition.

Thank you for your attention.
