6th Budapest Human Rights Forum to take place in Budapest 7-8 november 2013

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary launched the annual Budapest Human Rights Forum in 2008, a series of international human rights conferences which provides the international community with the opportunity to exchange views in various domains of human rights.

The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Member States of the Central European Initiative (CEI) held their annual meeting in Gödöllő (Hungary) on 31 October 2013. The meeting was organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, the 2013 Hungarian CEI Presidency, in cooperation with the CEI Executive Secretariat. The event was held back to back with the Visegrad Group + Western Balkans (WB) Foreign Ministers Meeting organised on 30-31 October in Gödöllő.

The success of the upcoming EU Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius and the resolving of the budget debate within the EU are in the interests of both the Lithuanian EU Presidency and Hungary. János Martonyi and Linas Linkevičius held talks in Budapest on Wednesday on the margins of the Foreign Ministers’ Meeting of the Visegrad Group (V4) and of the Central European Initiative (CEI) being held on October 30-31.
Hungary staunchly espouses the protection of human rights and privacy

The Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expects an immediate explanation from the United States in connection with a WikiLeaks report showing Budapest on a map of surveillance stations deployed by the National Security Agency (NSA). The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) stated that it was concerned about the surveillance and relay stations and expected the US to clarify the situation and provide an explanation about what happened as soon as possible, as previously requested from the US Ambassador in Budapest. The MFA declared that Hungary staunchly espouses the protection of human rights, including the protection of privacy.

Deputy State Secretary for Global Affairs Péter Wintermantel paid a visit to Japan from 24 to 26 October. During his visit, Mr Wintermantel held consultations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Besides the official meetings, he also participated at the event celebrating 23 October, Hungary’s National Day.

On the last day of the Budapest Water Summit (BWS) on October 11, Hungarian Foreign Minister János Martonyi stated that water should be a source of cooperation, and not of conflict. Wrapping up the Summit, János Martonyi said that it was high time to pay increased attention to the issue of the security of water supplies and also to give due priority to water management in the new UN development agenda.

The Ministers express their appreciation of the determination of those Eastern Partnership countries – Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine – which, despite some internal challenges, are progressing in the process of implementing political, social and economic reforms. The pace of reforms determines the intensity of cooperation, therefore partners most engaged in reforms benefit more from their relationship with the EU, in line with the “more for more” principle.
