The Foreign Ministers of the Visegrád four countries are travelling to Kiev to support Ukraine’s endeavours to overcome the crisis and help democratisation, Minister of Foreign Affairs János Martonyi said on 27 February 2014.
He stated that they are set to meet acting President of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov, chairman of the UDAR party Vitali Klitschko and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko in Kiev on 28 February 2014.
Minister Martonyi, with his counterparts from the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland, will then travel on to Donetsk to negotiate with the governor and leaders of the Russian community.
The Hungarian minister will on 29 February 2014 meet representatives of the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia.
The V4 countries have a special responsibility in the current situation. With their visit, the countries are placing a special accent on their joint declaration made on Monday that backed a sovereign and independent Ukraine, Minister Martonyi said. He said it was most important that the preparations for the presidential elections in May should continue.
A similarly important aspect is that the crisis should not spread on from the Crimean peninsula, he added.
As for the Hungarian community in the country, avoiding tensions in Transcarpathia is equally important, Minister Martonyi said.
