Hungary as member of the European Union and as the current President of the Council of the European Union welcomes the peaceful and genuine execution of the referendum on self-determination for Southern Sudan.

We are convinced that this referendum is an important milestone in the fulfillment of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement serving the long term settlement of the Sudanese conflict. Hungary remains fully committed to its implementation and wishes to contribute to the peaceful transition in Sudan. In order to achieve that, we request the parties to refrain from using violence and intimidation during this period. Hungary is interested in the expansion of democratic institutions as well as in the establishment of independent and sustainable economic structures both in North and South Sudan.
