Political Director Szabolcs Takács urged that a roadmap proposed by the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe to resolve the crisis in Ukraine be implemented, during talks in Moscow 13 May 2014.

After his talks with senior Russian foreign affairs officials, Mr Takács said that dialogue with Russia was crucial, especially in light of the Ukraine situation.

During a meeting with Vladimir Titov, first deputy to Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, Mr. Takács referred to Hungary’s interest in stability in Eastern Europe, and voiced Hungary’s trust in the settlement mechanism as proposed by OSCE. He added, however, that violence must be stopped and a political process needs to be put in place for that mechanism to be successful.

“Hungary supports the OSCE initiative and will participate in the mechanism,” Mr. Takács said. It is important that Ukraine has a functioning state, and a constitutional process which observes European norms and values, including ones concerning Ukraine’s ethnic minorities.

“It is our responsibility to contribute to building a Ukraine which ensures long-term security for Trans-Carpathian Hungarians and the necessary conditions for them to preserve their linguistic and cultural identity,” Mr. Takács said.

The Deputy State Secretary also met Russian deputy foreign minister Mikhail Bogdanov, and discussed issues around settlement in Syria.
