I am deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Ronald „Ron” Asmus. Ronald worked between 1997 and 2000 as the U.S Deputy Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, specializing in security policy, NATO and transatlantic relations.

He had imperishable merit for the acceptance of Hungary to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in 1999.

We, who had the honor and pleasure to know him personally, will always remember him as an expert and patron of Hungary and Central Europe. Ron was much more than only a partner; in fact he was a sincere friend, whom we could rely on any time, when there was a need for a sympathetic and supportive ally of our region in Washington.

By Ron’s death, an outstanding diplomat, an excellent thinker and a brilliant man left us behind. I am convinced that Ron’s legacy serves as an eternal example for all of us about successful transatlantic relations.
