Altogether 160 delegates from foreign organisations have registered to be present as observers at Hungary’s general election on 6 April, the National Election Office (NVI) said on its website.
Foreign delegates can stay at polling stations after having been registered Gábor Kaleta, the head of the Press Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Press Office told MTI Hungarian News Agency 4 April 2014.
Most observers registered from the OECD, their number is 79. The Support Initiative for Liberty and Democracy (SILBA) registered 23 observers. The Embassy of the United States in Budapest registered 17 people. The British and Russian embassies have registered four of their staff each, the Greek embassy three, the Romanian, Chinese, Indian, Slovenian, Dutch, Kazakh, Nigerian and Iraqi embassies two each, while the Portuguese and Venezuelan embassies sent one representative each to the Hungarian election. The Albanian central election committee registered five delegates, the South Korean election committee four, the Georgian central election committee two and the Romanian election committee one.
Once they have registered, there is no need for observers to make any future arrangements before visiting a polling station or the NVI’s headquarters on Election Day, Kaleta said. It is their duty to respect the laws and regulations of the receiving State. They also have a duty not to interfere in the internal affairs of Hungary.
