Today Foreign Minister János Martonyi, on the request of the Egyptian side, received Egyptian Ambassador Ashraf Mohsen without delay. Ambassador Ashraf Mohsen informed the Hungarian Foreign Minister about the situation in Egypt.
The Egyptian Ambassador underlined that the situation in Cairo was calm, and that there was a road map for taking the necessary steps. The Egyptian military has made the appropriate measures to achieve the required changes. The President of Egypt’s Constitutional Court is to be inaugurated as interim President of the Republic today. In the foreseeable future, with the aim of forming a national consensus, a new government will be set up, and then parliamentary and presidential elections will be held in Egypt.
János Martonyi appreciated the briefing offered by Ambassador Ashraf Mohsen, and declared that Hungary would closely follow the developments in Egypt. The Hungarian Foreign Minister stressed that avoiding violence was of foremost importance. He added that the Egyptian nation must define its own destiny through public dialogue, which should be based on respecting democratic principles as well as fundamental liberties. Hungary hopes that normalcy and public order will be restored as soon as possible, and it supports this process.
