India was the first nation to alter the course of history through non-violence, Hungarian Foreign Minister János Martonyi said at a celebration of the 64th anniversary of the Indian constitution.

Speaking at India's Budapest embassy on Sunday, Mr Martonyi stated that India represented, among others, the diversity of religions, cultures and languages for Hungary as well as for the entire world, and humankind should be grateful to India for being the first nation to alter the course of history through non-violence since the French Revolution. He also noted that India was the most populous democracy based on constitutional foundations and was also a growing superpower.

Ambassador Malay Mishra praised the special relationship between the two countries. India is receiving far more support from the Hungarian Government than it expected, and Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's visit to New Delhi last October opened a new chapter in bilateral relations, the Ambassador said.
