A conference on genocide prevention was held in Brussels on March 31 – April 1, on the twentieth anniversary of the genocide in Ruanda. Foreign Minister János Martonyi declared at the conference that the international community, despite the efforts made over the past 20 years, was still unable to avert the commitment of crimes against humanity and other atrocities.
Minister Martonyi stated that the Government of Hungary followed the policy of „zero tolerance” with respect to anti-semitic and anti-Roma acts. Hungary, on a regional as well as on an international level, takes part actively in the efforts and the institutional cooperation aimed at preventing the occurrence of genocides.
The participants of the conference explored the political, social and international legal aspects of genocides, and discussed the proposals for the prevention of genocides, including the practical application of the principle of Responsibility to Protect (R2P).
