The leadership and diplomatic corps of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Hungary was shocked to hear the sad news of the death of Presidential special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke.

The Ambassador was an outstanding and charismatic personality of the American Foreign Service, a living legend who served as an example for generations of diplomats. Richard Holbrooke has served in conflict-ridden regions and war zones where he played a key role in finding political solutions which would give way to peace and security. His personal contribution to the conclusion of the Dayton peace talk will be part of his lasting personal legacy. His diplomatic efforts in Afghanistan and Pakistan have greatly contributed to the success of the NATO mission of our troops. Ambassador Holbrooke will be remembered as a champion of democratic ideals and human rights, as an internationally praised and respected diplomat and a true friend.
